Last week, Alvvays delivered an illustrious performance at Pioneer Courthouse Square in Portland, OR, as part of the PDX Live Summer Concert Series. The last time Alvvays graced Portland was when they opened for Maggie Rogers at Edgefield in 2023, and their return as a headliner was highly anticipated.

The evening kicked off with an energetic set by The Beths, a New Zealand indie rock band known for their catchy power-pop hooks and tight guitar work. Formed in Auckland in 2014, The Beths have gained international acclaim with albums like “Future Me Hates Me” and “Expert in a Dying Field.” Their upbeat and harmonious style made them the perfect opener for Alvvays, setting the tone for a night of captivating music.

Alvvays took the stage to a roaring crowd, opening with “Easy on Your Own?” followed by fan favorites like “In Undertow” and “Adult Diversion.” The setlist also included “Belinda Says,” “Not My Baby,” and “Many Mirrors,” showcasing the band’s ability to blend nostalgic melodies with modern indie sensibilities. Each song was met with enthusiastic applause, and the band’s chemistry was tangible, making for a seamless and engaging performance.

The packed crowd at Pioneer Courthouse Square added to the concert’s vibrant energy. Fans of all ages swayed and sang along, creating a communal experience that highlighted the power of live music. Alvvays left the stage with the audience still buzzing, proof of their enduring appeal and the success of the PDX Live summer concert series.

Jenny Shackleton (she/her) is a photographer based in Portland, OR, originally hailing from Philadelphia, PA. Her love for live music started over 15 years ago after seeing the Jonas Brothers perform on their Burning Up tour in 2008 and the rest is history. As a naturally shy person, it’s surprising she feels so comfortable at concerts with hundreds of people attending, but has always believed that they are special, somewhat liminal, spaces. Everyone is there for the same reason: to have the best night and see artists pour their souls’ onto the stage. That is what Jenny likes to capture in her photos. Jenny enjoys spending time outside with her partner and their dog, watching movies, and owning way too many sneakers.
