In a mesmerizing display of musical alchemy, Khruangbin captivated a sold-out crowd at McMenamins Edgefield with a setlist that spanned generations and genres. Words and photos by Jenny Shackleton.

Under the celestial canvas of a summer night, Khruangbin returned to McMenamins Edgefield for an encore performance from the night before that solidified their place in the hearts of Oregonians. The venue, usually tranquil, was alive with anticipation as fans from all walks of life gathered to witness the trio’s fusion of world music. The air was thick with excitement, as attendees ranging from infants to elders, and clad in attire as varied as the music, added to the vibrant tapestry of the evening.

The band’s setlist was a curated mosaic of sound, weaving together tracks from their latest releases with the timeless rhythms that have defined their unique style. The chemistry between the members was palpable, each note and beat a testament to their synchronicity and shared passion for music. As the melodies floated through the air, the surrounding trees seemed to sway in rhythm, creating a natural amphitheater that enhanced the auditory experience.

Amidst the eclectic crowd, there was a sense of camaraderie, with strangers connecting over the universal language of Khruangbin’s music. The scene was a cultural kaleidoscope, with fans donning flower crowns and wigs in homage to the band, dancing and celebrating under the stars. The night was a harmonious blend of nature and artistry, a perfect backdrop for the soul-stirring performance.

As the final notes lingered in the cool night air, the audience was left with more than just memories of a concert; they carried with them a renewed sense of community and a reminder of music’s power to unite. Khruangbin’s second night at Edgefield was not just a concert, but a collective moment of joy and appreciation for the diverse threads that weave the fabric of music and life together.

Jenny Shackleton (she/her) is a photographer based in Portland, OR, originally hailing from Philadelphia, PA. Her love for live music started over 15 years ago after seeing the Jonas Brothers perform on their Burning Up tour in 2008 and the rest is history. As a naturally shy person, it’s surprising she feels so comfortable at concerts with hundreds of people attending, but has always believed that they are special, somewhat liminal, spaces. Everyone is there for the same reason: to have the best night and see artists pour their souls’ onto the stage. That is what Jenny likes to capture in her photos. Jenny enjoys spending time outside with her partner and their dog, watching movies, and owning way too many sneakers.
