Sasami’s Versatile Performance: Guitar Shredding, French Horns & Getting Freaky
Words and photos by Jenny Shackleton
Dressed in a striking denim corset, furry leg warmers and kitten heels, Sasami commanded the Wonder Ballroom stage in Portland with a unique blend of style and charisma. Her ability to shred on the guitar was matched only by her powerful vocals, which resonated through the venue with an electric intensity. The crowd was treated to a special moment when Sasami, having forgotten her guitar pick, asked for one from the audience. In true Portland fashion, a fan instantly produced one from their pocket, earning a heartfelt “Sasami fan vibes” shoutout from the artist.

Throughout the show, Sasami’s comedic banter and playful prompts kept the energy high, urging the crowd to “get freaky like it’s Friday night and not just a boring Tuesday.” Her versatility was on full display as she seamlessly transitioned from guitar to French horn, showcasing her multifaceted musical talent. The performance was punctuated by a poignant moment of silence to mourn the closure of Doug Fir Lounge, a venue she fondly remembered from her last visit to Portland.

Sasami’s latest album, Blood on The Silver Screen, released in March via Domino, has been lauded by critics from Wall Street Journal, Billboard, Consequence, US Weekly, Under The Radar and The FADER. The album’s precise and impeccable pop songwriting was evident in her live renditions, with songs that swooped and soared in all the right places. Working with co-producers Jenn Decilveo and Rostam, Sasami captured threads of love, sex, power and embodiment, creating a visceral experience for her audience.
The show was a testament to Sasami’s ability to blend vulnerability with humor, drawing influences from late aughts and 2010s pop icons like Britney Spears and Lady Gaga, as well as modern country storytelling. Her performance at Wonder Ballroom was a vibrant celebration of her musical journey, leaving the audience in awe and eagerly anticipating her next visit to Portland.

Jenny Shackleton (she/her) is a photographer based in Portland, OR, originally hailing from Philadelphia, PA. Her love for live music started over 15 years ago after seeing the Jonas Brothers perform on their Burning Up tour in 2008 and the rest is history. As a naturally shy person, it’s surprising she feels so comfortable at concerts with hundreds of people attending, but has always believed that they are special, somewhat liminal, spaces. Everyone is there for the same reason: to have the best night and see artists pour their souls’ onto the stage. That is what Jenny likes to capture in her photos. Jenny enjoys spending time outside with her partner and their dog, watching movies, and owning way too many sneakers.
