Hello Mary’s headlining performance at Polaris Hall on October 6th was an absolute thrill. Returning to the venue where they opened for Blondshell last year, the trio demonstrated their growth and evolution as artists. The anticipation was palpable as fans eagerly awaited songs from their new album, Emita Ox, which was released in September. The setlist featured a mix of new tracks and fan favorites, including “Float,” “Knowing You,” and “Heavy Sleeper,” showcasing their unique blend of indie rock and heartfelt lyrics.
The band, consisting of three childhood friends, has a chemistry that is undeniable. On stage, their interactions were filled with genuine affection and camaraderie, making it clear that they are not just bandmates but best friends. This connection translated into a powerful performance, where each member’s individual shyness melted away, replaced by a collective confidence that captivated the audience. Their ability to control the room was evident from the first note to the last.
One of the most striking aspects of the concert was the diversity of the crowd. It was a melting pot of demographics, with young women who see themselves in the band, and older, former-punk-rocker men who appreciate the raw energy and authenticity of Hello Mary’s music. This mix of fans created a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere, where everyone felt connected through the shared experience of the music.
Adding to the excitement, Hello Mary held a signing event at Music Millennium record store in Portland the day before the show to promote their latest release. This event allowed fans to meet the band up close and personal, further solidifying the strong bond between the trio and their audience. Overall, Hello Mary’s concert at Polaris Hall was a testament to their growth as musicians and their deep bond as friends. Their new album has clearly resonated with fans, and their live performance brought those songs to life in a way that was both intimate and powerful. It was a night that highlighted not only their musical talent but also their ability to bring people together, making it a memorable experience for all who attended.
Jenny Shackleton (she/her) is a photographer based in Portland, OR, originally hailing from Philadelphia, PA. Her love for live music started over 15 years ago after seeing the Jonas Brothers perform on their Burning Up tour in 2008 and the rest is history. As a naturally shy person, it’s surprising she feels so comfortable at concerts with hundreds of people attending, but has always believed that they are special, somewhat liminal, spaces. Everyone is there for the same reason: to have the best night and see artists pour their souls’ onto the stage. That is what Jenny likes to capture in her photos. Jenny enjoys spending time outside with her partner and their dog, watching movies, and owning way too many sneakers.
