In Constant Motion: greek Captivates Hawthorne Theatre
At Portland’s Hawthorne Theatre last Sunday, greek delivered a performance that felt equal parts concert and dance showcase. Words and photos by Jenny Shackleton.
The Martinsville, Virginia artist has built a reputation for blending R&B, pop, alternative, and electronic influences, but seeing those sounds come to life onstage revealed an entirely different dimension of his artistry. Backed by slick production and an easygoing stage presence, greek created an intimate yet energetic atmosphere that kept the crowd engaged from the opening notes to the final encore.
Much of the night’s magic came from the material off his new EP, DANCE BREAK. True to the title, greek was in near-constant motion, his feet shuffling across the stage with a style reminiscent of Michael Jackson’s signature glide. At times it looked almost like tap dancing, with every step landing perfectly in sync with the groove. The movement never felt rehearsed or forced. Instead, it appeared to flow naturally from the music itself, especially during the EP’s funkier, more rhythm-driven tracks. His footwork became an extension of the songs, adding a visual element that elevated the performance beyond a typical indie R&B set.
The setlist balanced newer songs with selections from CEDAR’S TAPE, ACCELERATOR, and EXTC, giving longtime fans plenty to enjoy while introducing newer listeners to the breadth of his catalog. Highlights included “PATIENCE” and several other tracks from DANCE BREAK, which translated especially well in a live setting. The newer material carried a buoyant, danceable energy, while older songs showcased the songwriting and production skills that have steadily earned greek a growing audience. His smooth vocals and attention to sonic detail were impressive throughout, but it was the confidence with which he moved through the set that tied everything together.
By the end of the evening, it was clear why greek has become an artist worth keeping an eye on. Still only in his mid-twenties, he possesses the rare ability to make complex musicianship feel effortless. Between his genre-blending sound, engaging stage presence, and seemingly endless footwork, greek turned the Hawthorne Theatre into his personal dance floor for one memorable Sunday night in Portland.
