Vundabar Brings Gawk 10-Year Anniversary Tour to Houston, TX
Boston-based rock band Vundabar stopped in Houston, Texas on June 8 for the Gawk Anniversary Tour, celebrating the sophomore album’s 10-year anniversary. Words and photos by Megan Eppolito.
The show took place at White Oak Music Hall, marking almost two years since they visited the venue. Surgery and Pleasure, the latest album release, received positive feedback for its unique sound and sharp lyricism, and fans were eager to hear the songs performed live.
Vundabar consists of Brandon Hagen (vocals and guitar), Drew McDonald (drums) and Zack Abramo (bass). They are known for energetic shows and connecting with the crowd — another reason fans adore them. “Sandstorm” by Darude played as the trio made their entrance on stage, sending a wave of applause from the packed venue. The show opened with “Ash in the Sun,” a track from Gawk. The set featured a mix of songs from the sophomore album, fan favorites and newer material, such as “I Got Cracked,” “Beta Fish” and “Spades.”
Years of performing together were evident in the band’s chemistry on stage. The synchronicity in their movements and captivating stage presence translated to the crowd. At certain spots in the songs, the band would freeze in a pose for a moment, with cheers from fans filling the room. Then, right on cue, they would go back to playing. The electric energy from the band was consistent throughout every song, taking breaks in between to be silly with the fans. Hagen’s interactions withe the crowd felt like watching close friends sharing an inside joke.
Chants for an encore filled the venue after the musicians left the stage. The four-song encore consisted of tracks like “Stallion Running,” “Desert Diddy,” “Alien Blues” and “I Need You.” For the final song, opening act, Goon, joined Vundabar on stage to commemorate their last stop supporting the band on tour. The performance created a collaborative and celebratory ending to the night. The musicians walked off stage to the song “I Swear” by All-4-One as the lights came up, and fans lingered by the barricade in hopes for a set list. The Gawk Anniversary Tour continues through June 19 before they head to Europe to co-headline with Yot Club.
